Role Summary

The Cubmaster is the primary program leader of the pack. Everything the Cubmaster does is aimed at helping individual Cub Scouts have a quality, fun, year-round experience. The Cubmaster leads monthly pack meetings, supports den leaders, recruits adult leadership, and coordinates with the pack committee to plan the annual program. The Cubmaster is the face of the pack to Scouts and families.


Requirements

  • Age: 21 years or older
  • Registration: Must be a registered adult leader of BSA
  • Selection: Recommended by the Pack Committee, approved by the Charter Organization Representative
  • Required Training:
    • Youth Protection Training (YPT) — renew every 2 years
    • Cubmaster Position-Specific Training (online at my.Scouting.org)
  • Recommended Training: BALOO (required for any adult leading a pack campout)
  • Access: Full access to pack website and Facebook page; does NOT have access to the pack bank account

Core Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead monthly pack meetings (approximately 1 hour, all dens and families attend)
  • Carry out the Cub Scout program according to BSA policies, including the Guide to Safe Scouting
  • Support den leaders: organize and conduct den leader meetings, encourage appropriate training, recognize den chiefs
  • With the pack committee, develop and execute a year-round recruitment plan
  • Work with the committee on program ideas, adult leader selection, and budget planning
  • Encourage Arrow of Light Scouts to cross over to a Scouts BSA troop; maintain relationships with local troops
  • Attend and participate in monthly pack committee meetings
  • Attend monthly district Roundtable meetings
  • Recruit den chiefs; ensure they are trained and recognized at pack meetings
  • Conduct advancement, recognition, and crossover ceremonies
  • Maintain good relationships with parents and guardians; communicate about the pack program
  • Wear the Cub Scout leader uniform at all pack events
  • Encourage family participation and service projects
  • Store pack property as needed
  • Delegate responsibilities to the Assistant Cubmaster as appropriate
