Role Summary

The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) is the second-highest youth leader in the troop. The ASPL fills in for the Senior Patrol Leader when needed, helps train and mentor new patrol leaders, and coordinates the work of appointed troop youth leaders such as the Quartermaster, Scribe, and Instructor.


Requirements

  • Selection: Elected by the troop or appointed by the SPL with Scoutmaster approval (troop policy varies)
  • Term: Typically six months, aligned with the SPL term
  • Training: Should complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)

Core Responsibilities

  • Fill in for the Senior Patrol Leader in their absence
  • Help train and mentor new patrol leaders
  • Coordinate the efforts of appointed troop youth leaders (Quartermaster, Scribe, Instructor, etc.)
  • Serve as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
  • Assist the SPL in planning and running troop meetings and activities
  • Support the SPL in leading the annual program planning conference
  • Set a positive example in Scout Spirit and personal conduct
